2nd Story

"Story"

History of 2nd Story Social Club – Minot, North Dakota

2nd Story Social Club was founded in the spring of 1975 by community members concerned that adults with developmental disabilities had no place to gather, socialize, and build friendships. Their goal was to create a supportive environment where people with developmental disabilities could enjoy social opportunities, learn new skills, and feel connected to their community.

Our First Home – and Our Name

The club’s first location was on the second floor of a building on 1st Street SW in downtown Minot. This upstairs space inspired the name 2nd Story. Although the location provided a starting point, the building could not be renovated to meet the needs of the people we served.

A Move to South Main

To better support members, 2nd Story moved to 11B South Main, into a basement space that offered more room and flexibility. Even after relocating, the organization proudly kept the name 2nd Story as a tribute to its origins and the community spirit that helped launch it.

The club remained at the South Main location for nearly thirty years.

A More Accessible Future

In 2005, with the support of Mike and Dorothy Dolan and the Minot Area Community Foundation, the need for a more accessible and accommodating facility was recognized. 2nd Story moved to its current home at 13 1st Avenue SW, a location designed to better serve adults with developmental disabilities.

Leadership That Shaped Our Mission

Over the decades, 2nd Story has been guided by dedicated directors who helped shape the organization and strengthen its impact:

  • Carolynne Jones, First Director (1975–1978)

Carolynne provided leadership during the club’s formative years, helping establish its mission and welcoming culture.

  • Coralee Johnson, Second Director (1978–1979)

Carolee continued building programs and community connections, ensuring that people with developmental disabilities had a safe and supportive place to gather.

  • Alayne Okland, Third Director (1979–2018)

Alayne led 2nd Story for nearly four decades. Under her guidance, the club expanded its services, strengthened partnerships, and navigated major transitions—including the move to its current location. Her leadership shaped the modern identity of 2nd Story and positively influenced generations of members and families.

A Community Effort

Today, 2nd Story continues to thrive because of the compassion, advocacy, and involvement of the Minot community. Without this support, the club would not be able to provide a safe, welcoming environment where people with developmental disabilities can build friendships, learn new skills, and enjoy meaningful opportunities every day.

MISSION STATEMENT

The mission of the 2nd Story is to enhance the quality of life for adults with developmental disabilities through social, educational and recreational activities.
